About this picture

Nordstrand ( North Frisian di Ströön ) is next to Elisabeth-Sophien-Koog the only municipality on the North Sea peninsula Nordstrand in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein .

Geography and traffic

Nordstrander foreland

The community consists of the largest part of the peninsula of the same name , the Hallig Nordstrandischmoor and part of the North Frisian foreland , which is still very much characterized by land reclamation . All parts of the municipality of the seaside spa can be reached today via dams, but Nordstrandischmoor can only be reached by cart and not by car .

Churches

St. Vincent Church Odenbüll

St. Vincent and the cemetery

Of the 22 churches on Alt-Nordstrand only three survived the Burchardi flood of 1634. The only one of them located on Nordstrand is the St. Vincent Church in Odenbüll . The building, erected on a terp , originally dates from the 13th century, but the facing masonry was completely renewed during a renovation in 1889, and the octagonal roof turret also dates from the same year . The Gothic and Baroque interior furnishings mostly date from the 18th century. The west and north lofts are from 1715, and wrought iron hat holders from the 17th and 18th centuries are still present on some of the cheeks.

The crucifix opposite the gallery (from around 1400) and the pulpit from 1605 are older. The most impressive work of art in the church is the late Gothic three-winged carved altar. Although the medieval painting was removed in the course of history, it is still characterized by a realistic and dynamic representation of the crucifixion scene .

The Vinzenz Church belonged to the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church , which was merged into the North Church in 2012 .

St. Theresa Cathedral

The Catholic Brabanters , who had received the Oktroy (charter) for the re-embankment of the land lost in the Burchardi flood in 1634, were also given permission to hold Catholic services. At first they celebrated them in the chapel in the house of the priest sent from Mechelen . In 1662 on the Osterdeich, where the three new kings Alterkoog (diked in 1654), Osterkoog (1657) and Trendermarschkoog (1661–1663) meet, the foundation stone for a simple church without a tower was laid, which was consecrated to St. Theresa of Avila . The bells of the neighboring Evangelical church were rung at funerals and other casuals . In 1887 the dilapidated building was renewed and received its own church tower with a bell. Today the parish belongs to the Old Catholic Church in Germany .

St. Knud Church

The third church in Nordstrander, the Roman Catholic St. Knud Church, is the youngest. It was built after the Nordstrander Catholic community split in 1740 in the dispute over Jansenism . The old Catholics kept the Theresienkirche, while those who were loyal to the Pope celebrated in the house chapel, as they did before the church was built. Since this was not recognized as a parish church , the children were baptized by the old Catholic priest, while one had to travel to Friedrichstadt for weddings . It was not until 1807 that the chapel was given the status of a parish church, and it was only after full religious freedom was introduced in Schleswig-Holstein in 1863 that the community was able to build its own church and found a school. The church, consecrated in 1866, is dedicated to St. Knud . Today it belongs to the Archdiocese of Hamburg .
