About this picture
Typical street scene in Oevenum

Oevenum ( Danish : Øvenum , Frisian : Ööwenem ) is a municipality on the island of Föhr in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein .

history

In 1796, 23 houses in the neighboring town of Nieblum were destroyed by fire, so that in Oevenum a bell was installed on the roof of the school building to warn the residents of a fire. The bell rang in the morning and at noon and served as an alarm signal not only in the event of fires, but also in the event of storm surges.

Germany's first youth fire brigade was founded in Oevenum in 1882 . This makes the Oevenum youth fire brigade probably also the oldest in Europe.

Oevenum has been a recognized resort since 1995.

A local history museum was set up in a former barn, which presented life and agriculture on Föhr. There was also information on seafaring, building dykes and the Wadden Sea . The museum has been closed since 2011.
