Location of the community of Süderende in the district of North Friesland | ||
Süderende ( Frisian : Söleraanj , Danish : Syderende ) is a municipality on the island of Föhr in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein .
history
The place used to belong to the municipality of Oldsum , the southern end of which it represented. Since Denmark's loss of Schleswig to Prussia in 1864 and the subsequent territorial reform, Süderende has been an independent municipality. The southernmost, uninhabited part of the area with an area of 122 hectares, however, remained with the municipality of Oldsum and has been an exclave since then . The municipality of Süderende thus borders on the municipality of Oldsum both in the north and in the south.
politics
The Süderender voter community (SWG) has held six seats in the municipal council since the local elections in 2018 , one seat is held by an individual applicant .
language
The most widely spoken language among the locals is Föhr Frisian , which has a strong position as a colloquial and family language in the west of Föhr. In 2007, the municipality of Süderende received the “Language-friendly municipality” award from the “ Sprachland North Frisia” campaign .
Schools and kindergartens
In Süderende there is one of two locations of the Föhr-Land primary school, which also houses the Protestant kindergarten "Jongensguard" of the St. Laurentii parish.
Attractions
On the southern edge of the village is the church of St. Laurentii , an originally Romanesque stone building from the 12th century, which was gradually expanded. In later times, bricks were used, which also characterize today's appearance. Renaissance paintings were uncovered on the ceiling of the nave in the 1990s . The grave of the whaler Matthias Petersen and the grave of the painter Oluf Braren can be visited in the extensive cemetery with numerous so-called speaking tombstones .
In addition, various cultural monuments are characteristic of the townscape. They are included in the list of cultural monuments in Süderende .
