Sprachland Nordfriesland is an action that was founded in 1997 by the Nordfriisk Instituut and is dedicated to promoting linguistic diversity in the Nordfriesland district ( North Frisian , South Jutian , Low German , Imperial Danish and High German ) and its public awareness. In addition to the Nordfriisk Instituut in Bredstedt, the sponsors of the campaign are the two large Frisian associations ( Friisk Foriining and the Nordfriesische Verein ), the Sydslesvigsk Forening as the cultural association of the Danish minority and the Center for Low German in Leck .

The campaign made its first public appearance with a language and street festival on the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the Nordfriesisches Institut eV in 1998. On the occasion of the turn of the year 1999/2000, which was widely noticed in the media, a writing competition on the topic of "Nordfriesland in the year 2100" followed 26 texts in Frisian and Low German were submitted. In the European Year of Languages 2001, another language festival followed in the North Sea Academy in Leck. On the 40th anniversary of the Nordfriesland district in 2010, the campaign took part with a festival of North Frisian diversity in Bredstedt.

The campaign advocates multilingual early childhood education. In 2012, a proposal was made as a result of the campaign to campaign for recognition of the North Frisian linguistic landscape as a world cultural heritage .
