history

Hattstedt was first mentioned in 1231 in the Waldemar-Erdbuch as Hattastath . The name probably refers to a man named Hatto . The Marienkirche in the village was first mentioned around 1240. The oldest parts of the building were probably built around 1200. In the following centuries it was expanded considerably. It received its distinctive, widely visible tower around 1500. The church has a pre-Reformation winged altar.

During the Second Marcellus Flood of 1362, the flat land in front of the Geest ridge was also under water, although it is relatively far inland. In 1460 the Hattstedtermarsch , which was called Hattstedter Alter Koog until 1803 , was diked. Hattstedt is the birthplace of the humanist Johannes Saxonius († 1561).

In 1864 a poor house was built, the building of which is still preserved. It is now privately owned and has been lovingly restored.

Theodor Storm married his second wife Dorothea Jensen in Hattstedt in 1866. The celebration took place on the Lindenweg 1 property under the so-called "Storm-Linden". These are still standing today.

After the annexation of Schleswig-Holstein by Prussia, the area of the parish of Hattstedt became a parish land municipality . It included the four villages of Hattstedt, Hattstedtermarsch , Horstedt and Wobbenbüll . On April 1, 1934, the parish rural communities were dissolved and the four rural communities of the same name were formed from the villages of Hattstedt.

From 1933, a geest knoll was removed for the two-year flood-free expansion of the Nordstrander Dam in the outer area to the west of the municipality of Wobbenbüll. The extraction point is still clearly visible today. The undeveloped eastern part is used as pastureland. Because of its special vegetation, it has been part of the Schobüller Berg landscape protection area since 1988.

In the last few decades Hattstedt has grown strongly and has changed from a small farming village with a few inhabitants and many thatched roof houses to a village with large areas of single-family homes. The population has risen sharply, which is primarily due to the location to neighboring Husum. In terms of spatial planning, the municipality is part of the urban area surrounding the North Frisian district town. The new settlement area is mainly on the western edge of the village towards the municipality of Wobbenbüll in the Geestrand area.

politics

Of the 17 seats in the municipal council has since the local elections in 2018 CDU eight, the SPD six and the voter community WGH three seats.

coat of arms

Blazon : “Of red and blue through a broad golden bar, covered with three red, gold-flamed heather roses, divided obliquely to the left. Above a silver horse's head, below a silver hat. "

The horse's head in the coat of arms indicates that, according to a legend, a man named "Hatte" was supposed to acquire the field mark of this parish after he had managed to plow this area with a horse in one day. There are old gravestones in the cemetery in Hattstedt, one of which belongs to the dike count Iwersen-Schmidt, who was a very good friend of Storm and to whom he set a memorial in the person of the old dike in the novella Schimmelreiter . This is the reason for the white horse's head in the proposed coat of arms.

The interpretation of the hill shape of the Geestrücken in the topography of Hattstedt suggests a hat shape. The hat in the proposed coat of arms was modeled on the habit of a man from the Hattstedt family.

A formerly predominant wild plant in the area was the heather . The stylized flower shape in the hand of the female person was transferred figuratively into the gold band of the coat of arms.

Community partnerships

economy

In the originally predominantly agricultural community, residential use is becoming increasingly important. Due to its location on the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park , tourism is also an important source of income. There is hardly any industry left. With the opening of the Marschbahn, several industrial companies (e.g. wooden shoe factory and concrete factory) settled here. However, these have long been closed. In their place there is now a new building area, for which the municipality had to remove many cubic meters of earth before the expulsion, as the soil had been contaminated with many chemicals during the period of operation.

traffic

Hattstedt is on the Hamburg - Westerland march railway . However, trains have not stopped there since the mid-1980s. The next train station is about six kilometers south in Husum . Buses on line 1020 ( Niebüll  - Bredstedt  - Husum) go there. In addition, the Husum city traffic line 1051 runs through Hattstedt.

The federal highway 5 runs through the municipality and leads from the Danish border to the federal highway 23 near Heide . The next motorway junction is Schleswig / Schuby on the A 7 , which can be reached via the federal highways 5 and then the 201 (about 35 kilometers).

The current transport policy issue is the expansion of federal highway 5 between Hattstedt and Bredstedt, which has been planned for years. The upgraded line ends so far in the eastern neighboring municipality of Horstedt and begins again north of Bredstedt. One argument in favor of expanding the line is to relieve traffic in the town center. Counter-argument emphasize economic and ecological issues. It can be assumed that the traffic relief could also lead to a loss of income for local retailers, and investors could possibly shy away from relocating. In addition, the route north-east of the town center, which has meanwhile been approved for planning, is also flawed, as the over-planned outdoor area includes ecologically valuable areas of the so-called Jelstrom . For this reason, construction has been postponed for the time being.

societies

The largest club in town is TSV Hattstedt. This mostly offers mass sports (soccer etc.), but also Jiu Jitsu or back and spine gymnastics.

The Hattstedt marching band is also characteristic. This club is characterized by many tournament victories. He regularly organizes an international music festival in Hattstedt.

The Nordisk center for kunst og cricket is located on the Mikkelberg , which is home to both the Husum Cricket Club with a larger cricket field and the Sydslesvigsk Museumforening. The center is integrated into the remains of an earlier Dutch mill from 1710. The Mikkelberg used to be the Mühlenberg of the place.

At the foot of the Mikkelberg is the tennis facility with three fields of the local tennis club; also the shooting club of the Hattstedter Schützenverein from 1962 .

Theodor Storm

The novella Der Schimmelreiter by Theodor Storm took place in the Hattstedt area, which reflects the down-to-earth nature and conditions of the country and people in this area and made it known beyond the borders. Theodor Storm was a frequent guest in Hattstedt, the son of the pastor from Hattstedt attended the scholars' school in Husum with him .

Storm's special bond with Hattstedt was reflected in various works by Storm. The Hattstedt church tower could have served as a model in the story “ Aquis submersus ”, where it says: “The gray pointed church tower” “built up to the shingle roof ... from granite blocks”. The same should also apply to descriptions in " Der Schimmelreiter" and the fragment " The poor sinners bell ".

Storm's relationship with Hattstedt was also shaped by the poet's personal experiences. Storm married his second wife Dorothea in Hattstedt in June 1866, but not in the church, but in the compastorate “Unter den Linden” in Lindenweg 1. The location there is also in “ Aquis submersus ”; the epitaph for this novella hangs in the church in Drelsdorf .
