Johannes Saxonius

John Saxonius (also: Johann axis Holstenius * to 1,507 / 08 in Hattstedt ; † 10. March 1561 in Hamburg ) was a German humanist of the 16th century.

Life

Saxonius attended the prestigious Husum School of Academics and from the winter semester 1525 studied law, philosophy and history at the University of Wittenberg . After he had obtained the academic degree of a Magister on January 31, 1531, he was admitted to the Senate of the Philosophical Faculty on April 6, 1530 and received his doctorate in law.

After living with Martin Luther for several years , he became professor of rhetoric in Wittenberg and in 1535 and 1539 he was dean of the faculty of philosophy. In Wittenberg he is the court master of Heinrich Rantzau , who, like his father Johann Rantzau, became one of the most influential personalities in Schleswig-Holstein of his time. Later he was appointed professor of law at the University of Erfurt .

In 1550 Saxonius became canon at the cathedral in Hamburg and in 1555 chancellor in the Duchy of Holstein-Gottorf .
