About this picture

Midlum ( Frisian : Madlem ) is a municipality in a heathland in the center of the island of Föhr in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein . Midlum-Marsch and Ackerumhof are in the municipality.

history

The place name is derived from the fact that the village is located roughly in the middle of the island. At the same time, it lies between the two historical main routes that crossed Föhr in a north-south direction. The place name was first mentioned in 1462.

Even today there is a custom in Midlum to cook on the dike once in spring. This custom originated at a time when the sheep were herded into the foreshore every spring, where they spent the summer under the supervision of a shepherd. A lot of children had always helped and therefore bags of flour were cooked for them on the dike .

Midlum was the seat of the administration of the Föhr-Land office until mid-2006 .
