The Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft is a transport company that operates local public transport on the island of Sylt with five bus routes. The owner has been the Nordstrander shipowner Sven Paulsen since 1995 , who, in addition to the SVG, runs the island and Hallig shipping company Paulsen founded by his father Kurt Paulsen . The company is based in Westerland .

history

The company was founded in 1952 by the entrepreneur Ruy Prahl, who combined the two formerly independently operated lines of the Sylt Inselbahn in this company . Shortly after the SVG was founded, buses were increasingly used alongside the island railway . At the end of 1970, the island railway was completely stopped and the buses took over the transport of people.

The bus replaced the train - SVG-ZOB at the former Inselbahnhof

Today the following line connections exist:

In addition, the SVG operates two city bus routes in Westerland and another route to Tinnum:

  • Line A: Westerland, central bus station - Syltness Center - Südwäldchen - camping site - nudist beach - Breslauer Straße - Westerland central bus station (open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., every 90 minutes, neither Sundays nor public holidays)
  • Line B: Westerland, ZOB - Alte Dorfkirche - Kollundweg - North Sea Clinic - Syltness Center - Westerland ZOB (service 7:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., every 90 minutes, neither Sundays nor public holidays)

The SVG operates a modern fleet of vehicles that is regularly renewed. The Mercedes-Benz Citaro and Van Hool A308 bus types are used for this due to the special traffic situation and the narrow space of the secondary roads with priority traffic . Occasionally, Mercedes-Benz O 405 buses were also used in the summer . Since October 2016, a reversed battery bus of the type Sileo S12 in SVG.

The starting point of all lines with the exception of line 5 is the central bus station at the train station in Westerland city center. The timing of the line connection is usually coordinated in such a way that it is possible to change between the lines in a timely manner and that the long-distance train timetables of the Marschbahn at the station are taken into account.

Others

In addition, the SVG offers regular island tours, excursions and special trips. Also, the student transportation to schools and numerous holiday and sanatoria on the island is carried out with special cars of SVG. For island tours and travel, the SVG uses modern coaches from the manufacturers EvoBus (especially Mercedes-Benz Travego ) and Van-Hool (also double-decker buses ).

A special feature are the self-designed bicycle racks that are mounted on the rear of all buses and that can hold up to five bicycles.

Vintage buses

Borgward BO 4000 (1952) - blue hood handlebar - old-timer bus
Magirus-Deutz O 3500 - green hooded bus, here still with the side lettering of the previous owner until 2015

The SVG has recently (again) two historic hooded buses, which can be rented for company and special trips:

  • retired before February 2015: FBW hooded vintage bus , Switzerland, yellow (1958 or 1968)
  • since summer 2011: Borgward BO 4000, blue (1952). The last running example of this type. Similar to the (semitrailer) tractors of the Inselbahn - from 1953 to the end of 1970.
  • from the beginning of February 2015: Magirus Deutz , green (1950)

The yellow and blue vintage buses and 13 other old hooded buses from all over Germany drove an island tour for 1000 passengers on July 6, 2013 to mark the 125th anniversary of the Sylt Inselbahn .
