The Jatznick – Ueckermünde railway is a branch line in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It connects the port city of Ueckermünde to the Berlin – Stralsund railway line .
history
The planning for a connection of Ueckermünde to the railway network began in the late 19th century. The focus of the considerations was less on passenger and more on freight. The main concern was a connection between Pasewalk and the port city, as the Uecker, as an alternative route, was not up to the increasing volume of freight.
The Prussian state parliament approved the construction of the line on April 25, 1882. This should initially lead along the main line to Stralsund to Jatznick and unwind shortly afterwards. From there it should go to Torgelow and further along the Uecker to Ueckermünde. For the construction of the line 1.2 million marks were initially estimated. However, since the construction turned out to be more difficult than initially thought, the capital was insufficient. Several bridges had to be built, especially north of Torgelow. The first section between Jatznick and Torgelow was opened to traffic on April 20, 1884, and the entire line was completed on September 15 of the same year.
On August 15, 2009, the railway line, which was extended by a total of 840 meters to the north, from the old Ueckermünde terminus to the new downtown stop and end point Ueckermünde Stadthafen was opened. In addition, the existing old railway line to the port, on which goods traffic ran until January 1, 1996, was given a new superstructure with a new track with three level crossings as well as safety and signaling technology. The former Ueckermünde train station was closed and replaced by a stop a little north of it with the same name.
The Torgelow train station was made barrier-free in 2018.
business
The route was well used from the start. This situation persisted over the decades until the fall of the Wall in the GDR . In the 1990s, the shift in freight transport to trucks began . In addition, numerous businesses along the route closed. Passenger traffic also fell sharply, which was also due to the closure or restructuring of numerous NVA locations (in this case Torgelow and Eggesin). In 2000, the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern awarded the passenger traffic on the route to the railway company (TOC) Ostmecklenburgische Railway (now Ostseelandverkehr GmbH ). Since then, through trains have been running from Ueckermünde to Bützow .
Since the timetable change on December 15, 2013, the trains have been operated by the railway company DB Regio instead of Ostseeland Verkehr . The new class 623 (LINT41) diesel multiple units have been in service since September 2015 . Every two hours is offered with repeater trips during rush hour.
