The Cerro Bonete Chico (the little Bonete) is a massive mountain in Sierra del Veladero in the high cordillera of the Andes in the province of La Rioja in northwest Argentina , near the border with Chile , which at an altitude of 6759 m is close to the height of the Candidates for the second highest mountain in South America, Monte Pissis and Ojos del Salado , making it the sixth highest mountain in South America. Repeated claims that the summit is at 6872 m and that the Bonete is therefore actually the second highest mountain in South America cannot be traced back to the SRTM data .
The Cerro Bonete Chico is often confused with the 800 m lower Cerro Bonete Grande , the great Bonete. The confusion arose from the fact that the large bonete wears a small cone or pointed hat, while the lower bonete grande as a whole looks like a large pointed hat, even if it is almost invisible on the southern slope of the neighboring Pissis and north of the giant volcanic crater Escondido or the Caldera del Inca lies.
