The Cerro Bonete Grande (the great bonete) is an extinct volcanic complex in Sierra del Veladero in the high cordillera of the Andes in northwest Argentina in the province of La Rioja near the border with Chile . It reaches its highest height with 5943 m.
The Cerro Bonete Grande is often confused with the Cerro Bonete Chico , the small Bonete, which is only 30 km away but 800 m higher . It is unclear why the higher of the two mountains is nicknamed Chico (the little one ).
Particularly striking is the 24 km² circular Caldera del Inca Pillo , in the southwest of which there is a 1.8 km² lake, the water of which is unusually warm due to the volcanic activity. Its cathedral reaches a height of 5386 m. This height drops towards the edges to about 5150 m. Volcanic rock eroded by meltwater has formed an extensive alluvial fan in the south. In the west and east, on the other hand, there are a number of table mountains of various sizes (0.5 to 3 km²) that reach a height of up to 300 m above the surrounding area. These mesetas are the remains of a former ignimbrite ceiling.
