The Monte Pissis (also Cerro Pissis ) in Argentina is at 6795 m (the 6882 m according to the Argentine Geography Institute IGM is probably a measurement error) the third highest mountain in America and most likely the second highest volcano on earth. It was first climbed in 1937 by Stefan Osiecki and Jan Szczepanski. The Andes volcanic massif lies between the Argentine provinces of La Rioja and Catamarca and has five main peaks, the highest being called Pissis CAM (Club Andino Mendocino). The rest are Gendarmería Nacional, Cardenal Samoré, UPAME and Ejército Argentino. He has been called Pissis since 1885.
In 1994 an Argentine group of experts measured the Pissis at an altitude of 6882 m with the help of modern GPS technology. It would have been the highest volcano on earth, even before the Ojos del Salado . However, this measurement turned out to be an error during follow-up measurements in the following years; all values were below 6800 m . This means that the Pissis is “only” the second highest volcano on earth with a probability bordering on certainty.
The Argentine provincial towns of Tinogasta and Fiambalá (thermal baths) are the starting point for ascents . The mountain is very remote, so it is rarely climbed. The base camp for its ascent can best be reached with an all-terrain vehicle. There are no technical difficulties, but crampons are required to access the crevasse-free glacier field. At about 6200 m you will find an ice-free area suitable for the high camp.
