Coordinates: 53 ° 32 '8.6 " N , 14 ° 7' 2.7" E
The Großer Koblentzer See nature reserve is a 270 hectare nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania seven kilometers northeast of Pasewalk . The eponymous place Koblentz is not far to the east. It was placed under protection on May 27, 1960. The protected area includes a valley moor, a lake ( Großer Koblentzer See ) with an island, an inland salt station and a limestone swamp and is an important resting and breeding area for water birds. The current state of the area is assessed as satisfactory because the water balance of the areas is disturbed. Two lookout towers on the south-east bank allow very good bird watching.
history
The Koblentzer See was formed by melt water that formed after the end of the last ice age. Salty groundwater enters the lake from a depth of 50 meters from a cut chalk clod on the north bank. A saltworks was operated on the south bank of the lake until the 17th century. From the 19th century, fen areas were used as grassland, where pasture farming is still practiced today.
Flora and fauna
Salt vegetation with beach trident , salt bulrush , marsh orchid , salt chickweed , strawberry clover and beach plantain can be found on the salt areas in the south of the lake. Breeding birds in the area are the bittern , pochard , gadfly , teal and teal . Cranes use the lake as a place to sleep during migration. The otter lives in the area.
