The Großer Koblentzer See is a lake near Koblentz in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .
The approximately 80-hectare body of water is located in the municipal area of the eponymous place Koblentz, which is not far from the southeast end of the lake. The ditch that forms the outflow of the lake to the north flows directly into the Randow . The lake is about two kilometers long and about 800 meters wide. It is located in a swampy environment in the nature reserve of the same name . In the lake there is a larger, very flat and partly wooded island. The eastern shore of the lake is forested.
Like all lakes in the area, the water was formed by meltwater after the end of the last ice age . Salty groundwater enters the lake from a depth of 50 meters from a cut chalk clod on the north bank. A salt works was therefore also operated on the south bank of the lake until the 17th century . Since the 19th century, the surrounding fen areas have been used as grassland, where pasture farming is still practiced today.
