Görmitz is a 99.14 hectare island in the backwaters of the island of Usedom , 340 meters east of the Gnitz peninsula . The Twelen , an arm of the backwater, separates the island from the peninsula. The island is a nature reserve managed by the Jordsand Association.

Görmitz belongs to the municipality of Lütow in the Am Peenestrom district . In the middle of the island there is an inhabited farm, the remains of a holiday home and in the south a former beacon .

Until the 1960s, the island and Vorwerk could only be reached by private ferry boats from Netzelkow.

In the 1960s, Görmitz was connected to Usedom with a dam northeast of Neuendorf. The dam consisted of rubble and broken concrete that was covered with earth and paved with a concrete slab road. The construction project was related to the oil production in Lütow ; In the 1970s and 1980s, 3 to 4 wells were also used to search for crude oil on Görmitz, but the wells there were not productive and were discontinued.

The controversial dismantling of the dam was completed at the end of 2016.

history

The place "Görmitz" or "Görms" was first mentioned in 1672 as an inhabited place. The Slavic name is interpreted as summer sowing.

It was owned by the von Lepel family for over 700 years . Here was a Vorwerk of the Neuendorfer / Netzelkower estate with cattle husbandry.

In 1865 this Vorwerk, known as Holländerei, had only one house but 24 residents.

In 1937 the island was sold to a Dr. Kerkhoff from Düsseldorf sold.

After 1945 and after the land reform, refugees got land and ran cattle and agriculture there. The island then became a recreational property for the company VEB Nachrichtenelektronik Greifswald and after 1990 through the takeover of the NEG - ownership of Siemens AG. Today the island is almost completely under nature protection, in the south there were relics of a Neolithic settlement with a workshop for flint tools. In July 2006 Siemens AG sold Insel Görmitz to the shareholders of Wertgrund Insel Görmitz GmbH . However, there was no management and no expansion of the planned holiday complex. The buildings, except for the farmstead, are in ruins. Since 2006 the island was leased for agricultural use to a farmer who kept cattle there. Therefore, the island was sold to this farmer from Rostock in August 2012. The northern part of the island has limited access.
