Langenwerder is a small, uninhabited and protected standing island. It is located near the island of Poel north of Gollwitz, a district of the municipality of Insel Poel . It is separated from the island by the shallow hollow . The Gollwitz Bay separates it from the Boiensdorfer Werder peninsula on the mainland . The Langenwerder was created as part of the Littorina transgression several thousand years ago as a beach wall , which is still actively formed today in the context of coastal compensation processes.

The only buildings on the island are the bird keeper station, which was built in 1935/36 and is located on the northwest coast of the island.

The Langenwerder belongs to the Wismar Bay landscape unit , which is classified as an FFH area and a bird sanctuary under EU law . A comprehensive management plan to coordinate the interests of nature conservation , water sports and fishing was drawn up in 2006. The island itself and the surrounding shallow water areas have been designated as a nature reserve since June 23, 1924 . The purpose of protection is to preserve the island as a habitat for the coastal bird world, which is dominated by seagulls, ducks and terns. Typical biotopes in the nature reserve are dunes , salt marshes and marine block and stone grounds. Notable breeding birds are the little tern , the shelduck and the arctic tern , oystercatchers , ringed plover and redshank as well as the shelduck . The protected area is looked after by the Langenwerder Association for the Protection of Waders and Water Birds. V.

The current state of the area is only classified as satisfactory due to numerous disturbances in the surrounding water areas by water sports and anglers .

Entering the 800 meter long and 500 meter wide Baltic Sea island is generally not permitted.
