The Santower See is a lake between the municipalities of Warnow and the southern city of Grevesmühlen . The lake is very shallow and has been placed under nature protection due to the nationally important flora and fauna. The west bank is wooded and very swampy. There are two smaller islands in the lake. On the western island you can still find remnants of an earlier building.
The Santower See is a polytrophic (originally mesotrophic - eutrophic) lake. The relatively poor water quality can be traced back to the discharge of waste water from stables and the neighboring villages until the 1990s.
The water level of the Santower See used to be higher than it is today. The Schleusgraben, dug in 1710, has since diverted the water to the Tarnewitz Bach, which flows into the Baltic Sea at Tarnewitz . The ditch leading out of the lake to the west of Warnow caused the water level to drop by two to three meters.
Due to the NSG regulation, there are extensive restrictions on fishing use. Since the 1990s, attempts have been made to revive cultural and historical forms of use (grazing and mowing ) to preserve the unique flora in the area of the lake terraces. This is coordinated by the Northwest Mecklenburg Nature Conservation Union.
