Schanzenberge nature reserve near Mankmoos

The Schanzenberge nature reserve near Mankmoos is a nature reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is located about one kilometer northeast of the town of Mankmoos . It covers an area of eleven hectares, was placed under protection on February 9, 1998 and is used to maintain and develop dry sites. The state of the area is satisfactory after sheep grazing has been abandoned, as the areas are subject to succession and pioneer sites are disappearing. The areas are mowed in places in order to maintain the open character. The area belongs to the premises of a gravel mine and may not be entered.
history
The nutrient-poor and sandy areas formed as sand during the last ice age . The Wiebeking map of 1786 shows that the land is mainly used. The hilltops overgrown with bushes have been grazed with sheep until today. The use of the fields was given up decades ago. Today the area is free of use, but the up to twenty meters thick gravel deposits are being mined.
Flora and fauna
Lean lawns cover a large part of the protected area. Typical species are carnation , sheep fescue , thyme , meadowsweet and meadow oats . The nesting birds include the red- backed partridge , partridge , owls , oriole and barnacle warbler. The sand lizard can be found on the warm surfaces . Significantly, numerous species of butterfly as Julia Butterfly , Baumweißling and Violet Waldbläuling .
