The nature reserve is part of the FFH area “Coast of Klützer Winkel and Ufer von Dassower See and Trave” and to a large extent part of the EU bird sanctuary “Feldmark and Uferzone an Untertrave and Dassower See”. It borders on the nature reserve " Dassower See, Insel Buchhorst and Graswerder (Plönswerder) ". On the Traveförde it borders in the north on the nature reserve " Coastal landscape between Priwall and Barendorf with Harkenbäkniederung " and in the west on the nature reserve " Selmsdorfer Traveufer ". At Dassow it borders on the nature reserve " Stepenitz- und Maurine-Niederung ". The "Palinger Heide and Teschow Peninsula" conservation area adjoins to the south and west .

The nature reserve is located northeast of Lübeck . It places the flat and steep banks of the Dassower See in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania area under protection. The steeper bank areas are characterized by dry locations that merge into wet bushes towards the lake and the reed areas surrounding the Dassower See . A steep bank is particularly pronounced in the north of the protected area. Here a change from loose bushes and pre-forest biotopes is predominant. On the flat bank areas and the lowland areas, reed areas and scrub forest areas as well as wet meadows with flood lawns and tall herbaceous vegetation predominate. In particular, the lowland area near Teschow is forested. The course of the Benckendorfer Bach is also accompanied by trees.

The nature reserve is a habitat and a. of kingfisher , goosander , red-backed killer and sparrowhawk . The dry locations on the steep bank areas and along the former column path are taken up by dry sand turf . They are of great importance for reptile and insect species that have adapted to this habitat .

The nature reserve is largely surrounded by agricultural land on the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania side . In places, wooded areas adjoin.
