The Mechower See is a eutrophic (originally mesotrophic) Ice Age channel lake within the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve . It is located east of the eponymous municipality of Mechow in the Schleswig-Holstein district of Duchy of Lauenburg , directly on the border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ( district of Northwest Mecklenburg ).
description
With the Bäk , the Mechower See has an outflow that operated copper hammers or copper mills at at least five barrages in the early modern period . It is located on the watershed between Ratzeburger See and Schaalsee.
At the Mechower See there is only one point with access to the water on the long north-east bank. This is located south of Schlagsdorf . Access can be reached on foot from the village via an unpaved path and is used as a swimming area. There is also a larger footbridge here.
A hiking trail runs parallel to the lake along the entire north-east bank, via which this swimming area can also be reached. At the starting point of the hiking trail (on Landesstrasse 1) there is a large parking lot for anglers and hikers. In the vicinity of the L 1 are several boat docks and another bathing place.
There is a wooden observation tower ( Se ) on the north-west bank of the lake , which is mainly used for bird watching.
During the time of the GDR
During the time of the German Democratic Republic , the lake was in the immediate exclusion zone of the inner German border and was only accessible to the border troops of the GDR . Only one fisherman from Klocksdorf was allowed to fish the lake twice a year, a boat from the border troops monitored him. The border with the Federal Republic of Germany ran directly on the south-western bank, the border barriers and the border fence were on a hill on the north-eastern bank and were difficult to see from the west. Nevertheless, several people managed to overcome the barriers, swim through the lake and flee to the Federal Republic. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the border between Wietingsbek and Schlagbrügge was officially opened on December 31, 1989, also at Lake Mechower.
natural reserve
The Mechower See has been designated as a nature reserve since 1992 , whereby the state of the area is classified as unsatisfactory due to the high levels of nutrients. It is part of a bird sanctuary and FFH area . Numerous species of birds such as white-tailed eagles , tree hawks , red kites , hawks , pygmy swans and various types of ducks and geese find a habitat.
Green band
Because of its secluded location on the inner-German border, the nature reserve is now part of the so-called Green Belt . The nature reserves (NSG) in the area of the Green Belt in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are (from north to south) in the Schaalsee biosphere reserve the NSG Wakenitzniederung , Kammerbruch , Campower Steilufer , Kiekbuschwiesen near Neuhof , Mechower See, Goldensee , Techin , furthermore the NSG Wallmoor , Pipermoor / Mühlbachtal , Stecknitz-Delvenau and in the former Mecklenburg Elbetal nature reserve the dissolved NSG Elbhang Vierwald , Elbdeichvorland , Rüterberg , inland dunes near Klein Schmölen and Löcknitztal-Altlauf , which are now all part of the Elbe-Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania river landscape biosphere reserve .
