The Mechow lake shore and adjacent areas is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Mechow and Ziethen in the Duchy of Lauenburg district .

The 111  hectare nature reserve is entered under number 152 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was designated in 2013 (date of the ordinance: July 15, 2013) and replaces the 31 hectare nature reserve “Mechower Seeufer”, which was designated at the end of 1992. The nature reserve is largely part of the EU bird sanctuary "Schaalsee area" and the FFH area "Forests and lakeside east of the Ratzeburg lake". It borders directly on the northeast lying nature reserve " Mechower See " in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and in the north on the nature reserve " Steinerne Rinne and Mechower Holz ". The nature reserves “ Lankower Seeufer, Grammsee and Surroundings ” and “ Lankower See ” connect to the southeast . The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Duchy of Lauenburg district.

The nature reserve is located northeast of Ratzeburg in the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park . It is part of the Green Belt along the former inner-German border and places the western shore area of the Mechower See and some of the areas adjacent to it under protection.

In its northern area, the protected area is predominantly characterized by a narrow strip of broken forest on the shores of the Mechower See . In the area directly adjacent to Mechow and the areas south-east of Mechow, extensively used grassland areas with tall herbaceous corridors and woody trees near the banks predominate. South-east of Mechow there is a wetland with reed zones and a still water in the nature reserve.

Furthermore, in connection with the other nature reserves in the valley channel system of the Ratzeburger See , Mechower See, Lankower See and Schaalsee water chain, which was shaped by the Vistula Ice Age , it is a link between the biotopes in this area.

Most of the areas in the nature reserve belong to the “Schaalsee-Landschaft” association, which also looks after the area. There is an observation tower in the northwest of the nature reserve .
