The high bank of the Elbe between Tesperhude and Lauenburg is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein towns of Geesthacht and Lauenburg / Elbe and the municipality of Schnakenbek in the Duchy of Lauenburg .

The approximately 455  hectare nature reserve is registered under number 142 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was expelled in 1993 (date of regulation: January 12, 1993). The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Duchy of Lauenburg district.

The nature reserve is located on the north bank of the Elbe and extends for around nine kilometers between the Geesthacht district of Grünhöf-Tesperhude and the city of Lauenburg / Elbe. It is part of the FFH area "Elbe with high banks of the Elbe from Tesperhude to Lauenburg with adjacent areas" and the biosphere reserve "River Landscape Elbe" .

The area protects the Elbe foothills and the steep slope of the Elbeurstromtal , which slopes down to the south . The groynes that extend into the Elbe with the shallow water areas in between and part of the river are included in the nature reserve. The nature reserve is characterized by the Elbe and the steep slope adjacent to the north. The steep slope, rich in springs, is predominantly forested. Here light hillside forests alternate, in which u. a. Sessile oak , pine, field elm and wild pear grow, with beech and spring forests. There are also slide slopes . Dry oak forests grow in deeply dug canyons . The banks of the Elbe are lined with alternating perennial vegetation , reed beds and willow bushes , followed by natural softwood meadows with purple willows and black poplars .

The nature reserve serves as a habitat for numerous animals and plants. So come here u. a. River and sea ​​lamprey and asp . The sand lizard and other reptiles are just as indigenous as numerous amphibians , birds and bat species . The beaver also appears here again.

South of Schnakenbek is the Ertheneburg , a former medieval fortification, within the nature reserve. The nature reserve is accessible in several ways. The Elberadweg runs between Geesthacht and Lauenburg through the protected area.
