The Billetal is a Schleswig-Holstein nature reserve . The part of the river Bille that lies between the Grander Mühle and the confluence with the Reinbeker Mühlenteich is protected . This 176 hectare section of the river is protected because it has near-natural, river-typical structures with a corresponding flora and fauna. The area has been under protection since 1987 and is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000 . The special habitats include running waters with flooding vegetation, tall herbaceous meadows, alluvial forests and Haimsimsen beech forests. The area borders directly on the Sachsenwald .

For special avifauna of the area include Kingfisher , Gray Wagtail and the wintering here dippers . The Bille also has a number of fish species that place special demands on the water quality. These include brown trout , grayling , brook loach and minnow .
