Maura and Krukenbek is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Salem and Sterley in the Duchy of Lauenburg .

The approximately 84  hectare nature reserve is registered under number 208 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was declared at the end of 2013 (date of regulation: November 19, 2013). The nature reserve is part of the EU bird sanctuary “Schaalsee area” and largely part of the FFH area “Amphibian areas west of Kittlitz”. In the south there is the nature reserve " Schaalsee with Niendorfer Binnensee, Priestersee and Großzecher Küchensee, Phulsee, Seedorfer Küchensee and the surrounding area". The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Duchy of Lauenburg district.

The nature reserve is located southeast of Ratzeburg in the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park . It protects the Maura forest as well as the extensively used grassland areas surrounding it and the Krukenbek valley, which is cut into a ground moraine , with adjacent slope areas and other areas used for agriculture and forestry.

The area is characterized by a mosaic of different biotope types . Sun can be found in the area of the forest Maura unused breakage and swamp forests with old and dead wood . Furthermore, in the nature reserve marshes and reedbeds with water vapors and reed canary grass , numerous ponds with Laichkraut- and floating leaf vegetation wet grassland with Seggenriedern and Hochstaudenfluren and a regenerating low moor complex to find. In the edge and slope areas there are grass corridors and dwarf shrub heath dominated by common heather , pioneer forests with beech, oak, pine and birch as well as partially sandy grasslands and open sand corridors.

The nature reserve is a habitat and feeding habitat, etc. a. of crane , white stork , black and middle woodpecker , red kite , quail , red- backed shrike , wood sandpiper and whinchat . Amphibians are z. B. represented by red-bellied toad and crested newt. The bellied diaper snail can also be found here.

In addition to protecting the area as a habitat, it is also part of the network system within the Schaalsee landscape and ensures that fewer nutrients and pollutants enter the Schaalsee.

Most of the areas in the nature reserve belong to the “Schaalsee-Landschaft” association, which also looks after the nature reserve. The area is crossed by the county road 48 and borders on other roads in the northwest, northeast and east. In the northeast, the Eichhorst forest area adjoins the nature reserve. Otherwise, agricultural areas , and in the south, further forest areas , adjoin the nature reserve.
