The Ibiza (Type 6K) was presented in early 1993.
While the technology now came exclusively from VW, Giorgetto Giugiaro was again responsible for the body shape. The Seat Ibiza has a drag coefficient (C w ) of 0.33. The Ibiza (6K) was built entirely under the direction of the VW Group , and Volkswagen adopted many equipment features for the Polo 6N, which appeared a year later . Initially, this first "VW Seat" was seen as a cheap alternative to VW, but the introduction of the Cupra models and the successes in the rally sector gave Seat a sporty reputation.
The Ibiza 6K was sold in South Africa as VW Polo Playa (with VW trademark in the grille).
Engines
The Ibiza 6K (1993–1999) is based on the Polo 6N and thus for the first time on the VW Group platform. However, on the Ibiza, the front axle and engine suspension were taken from the Golf III instead of those of the Polo 6N and therefore mostly other engines were used, such as the 2.0 16V (110 kW (150 PS)) ABF from the Golf III GTI in the Ibiza Cupra 16V , or the diesel engines with the SDI engine with 47 kW (64 PS), the TDI engines with 66 kW (90 PS) and later 81 kW (110 PS). The latter was also used in the special model of the Golf III “GTI TDI”. This engine helped the Ibiza to achieve good sales figures in the growing diesel segment.
The advantage of the modified engine suspension and different engine design ( VW EA827 engine block) was that the Seat Ibiza had far fewer gearbox damage than the Polo 6N. The VW 020 and VW 02A transmissions were used, which were significantly more stable than the 085 transmissions in the Polo 6N.
