The Seat Leon I (type 1M1) was a compact class vehicle from Seat . It was presented at the IAA in 1999 and went to dealers in November 1999. Its technical basis is the VW Group's PQ34 / A4 platform on which the VW Golf IV is based, but also the VW Bora (internal name 1J), VW New Beetle (1C) , Audi A3 8L , Audi TT 8N , Škoda Octavia I and other types of vehicles from various VW brands.

General

The Leon was the hatchback version of the notchback model Seat Toledo 1M2 , which was reissued in October 1998 , with which it is identical up to the rear doors. It is only available with five doors.

Model variants

The Leon was originally introduced in the Stella , Signo and Sport equipment lines . The Stella is the basic model.

The Signo (which was still called Signum in the first few weeks of production in model year 2000 ) has extensive basic equipment, including automatic air conditioning, four electric window lifters or electrically folding and heated exterior mirrors that were available for model year 2001 (rain sensor, CD radio, and much more) was again significantly upgraded.

The sport is more sporty and offers, among other things, a sport leather steering wheel, sport seats, sport suspension, larger brake discs with 312 mm diameter, a 6-speed gearbox and a lowering of 15 mm compared to the standard model. The c w value for all models is 0.32. The tank holds 55 liters. Only the versions with all-wheel drive (Sport 1.8 20VT4 and the Cupra 2.8 V6) have a tank capacity of 62 liters. This reduces the trunk from 340 to 270 liters. The standard tires on the 6-speed models are also larger. The 1.8 20VT and 20VT4 run on 205 / 55R16 91 W and the Cupra 2.8 V6 on 225/45 R17 91 Y compared to the basic version with 195/65 R15 91 V. The models with all-wheel drive have an electronic stability program and internally ventilated disc brakes at the front and rear as standard .

The following engine and equipment variants were available in the first model year (model year 2000, produced until the end of April 2000):

  • Stella 1.4 16V (55 kW / 75 PS)
  • Stella / Signo 1.6 8V (74 kW / 100 PS, optionally with automatic)
  • Signo / Sport 1.8 20V (92 kW / 125 PS, later optionally with automatic)
  • Sport 1.8 20VT (132 kW / 180 PS optionally with all-wheel drive)
  • Stella 1.9 SDI (50 kW / 68 PS)
  • Stella / Signo 1.9 TDI (66 kW / 90 PS)
  • Signo / Sport 1.9 TDI (81 kW / 110 PS)

From 2002 also:

  • Cupra 2.8 V6 (150 kW / 204 PS with all-wheel drive)
  • Cupra R 1.8 20V Turbo (154 kW / 209 PS later 165 kW / 224 PS)
  • Top Sport 1.9 TDI (110 kW / 150 PS optionally with all-wheel drive), 1.8 20VT (132 kW / 180 PS optionally with all-wheel drive)

In autumn 2000, the 1.6-liter gasoline engine with two-valve technology and 74 kW (100 hp) was replaced by a new 1.6-l gasoline engine with four-valve technology and 77 kW (105 hp), and the four-speed automatic was only available in the future still available in conjunction with the 1.8 l petrol engine.

Later on, the Leon was expanded to include a few equipment lines.

In April 2001 the Cupra (abbreviation for "Cup Racing") was added as a new top model with modified front, rear and side spoilers, all-wheel drive and upgraded interior fittings. The Cupra was only available in Germany with a 2.8-liter V6 petrol engine with 204 PS (150 kW), and abroad as a 1.9 TDI with 110 kW (150 PS) and pump-nozzle technology - both engines are always included Four wheel drive . Recaro sports seats in fabric / leather combination and Cupra logos on the front and rear, speedometer scales with a white background, sports leather steering wheel with recessed grips and Cupra logo, matt gray painted center console, sports pedals, black trim parts (for example on the automatically dimming interior mirror with rain sensor), 17th -Inch aluminum wheels, sports exhaust with twin tailpipes were among the equipment details. The Cupra was only offered in the three traditional Seat colors red, yellow and black. Only towards the end of the Cupra model cycle were other paint colors available for a few weeks. Outside the German market, for example in Great Britain, the 1.8-liter turbo engine with 132 kW (180 hp) engine with all-wheel drive was also offered for some time as the Cupra.

In the spring of 2001 a sports TDI with 110 kW (150 PS) and the normal sports equipment, without all-wheel drive and without Cupra details, was available for a short time. In contrast to the Cupra TDI, this model was also offered in Germany. Due to its short availability, it is even rarer than the already rare Cupra.

In spring 2002, another top model called the Cupra R followed with an even sportier look. Initially 17-inch wheels, from model year 2003 18-inch wheels as standard, also a sports brake system from Brembo (the latter up to model year 2005) and the well-known Recaro seat system from the Cupra, but here as a pure fabric version. The interior was kept completely in black, but the equipment was limited to the essentials and, in contrast to the Cupra, was clearly designed for sport rather than luxury. The output was initially 154 kW (209 hp) and was later increased to 165 kW (224 hp). Its 1.8-liter turbo gasoline engine, familiar from the Audi TT and S3, accelerates the Leon to 100 km / h in 6.9 seconds and to 200 km / h in 27.8 seconds (test Auto Bild ). The lack of all-wheel drive means that Car lighter than an Audi TT or S3 and can convert this advantage into a small lead in acceleration on dry roads.

In autumn 2002 there was then a small facelift, which mainly concerned the equipment details. The lower parts of the fittings, previously gray or black depending on the model, were now always black. The radio Aura , which is standard on many models , now has a CD drive (instead of a cassette). Some equipment details have also been omitted, such as the electrically folding exterior mirrors as standard on the Signo and Cupra. The Cupra and the Sport 1.8 20VT (132 kW / 180 PS) model variants were deleted, and the Top Sport (TS) model was added, which does not differ visually from the Cupra on the outside, but all the more clearly in the interior. Most noticeable is the waiver of the Recaro sports seats, instead there were sports seats from the Sport model. On the engine side, the Top Sport equipment line included the 2.8 V6 with all-wheel drive, 1.9 TDI (110 kW) with front-wheel or all-wheel drive, and the 1.8 20VT (132 kW) with front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

In February 2003, replaced new teardrop-shaped mirrors the somewhat "bulkier" mirror of the Golf IV. In addition came in the spring of 2003 as a further motorization of the 1.9 TDI with 96 kW (130 PS), in Germany available as model Signo and Sport , however (in the Netherlands Part as slimmed-down top sports equipment).

At the end of August 2003, the all-wheel drive option was discontinued, so that the Leon was only available with front-wheel drive. Shortly afterwards, the V6 engine was deleted as an engine variant.

In the 2004 model year, it was still listed as a Top Sport, but was renamed Formula Racing (FR) in mid-2004 . Here, too, only the equipment details changed, the external appearance remained with the original Cupra look.

In the seven years of production of the Leon 1M, there were also some special models, almost all of which were based on the Stella equipment line and were expanded with a few extras. The names of the special models ( e.g. Torrid , Magma ) differed depending on the country of origin of the vehicle. What they all had in common, however, was that the plastic elements of the front and rear aprons were painted in the vehicle color. Exceptions were the special models Pulso (based on: Sport) and Top Sport Jerez , of which only very few copies were produced, and Supercopa , both of which were based on Top Sport / Formula Racing. The Supercopa was named after the racing car used in the Seat brand cup.

In the last model year, 2006, starting in October 2005, the 1M, similar to the technically related Škoda Octavia (1U), was continued to be produced in parallel with its successor, the Seat Leon II , but with a very limited choice of engines and equipment. The last 1M models were called Last Edition or Torro ; in addition to the 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 77 kW (105 hp), there was for the first time a 1.9-l TDI diesel engine with 74 kW (100 hp) and pump-nozzle Injection to choose. The latter is the only 1M Leon with a diesel engine to meet the Euro 4 emissions standard . There was no standard particulate filter for this model, as for all the others.
