The nature reserve is located on the edge of the Green Belt in the south of Lübeck ( St. Jürgen district ) between Lübeck-Blankensee, Groß Grönau and Sankt Hubertus. It encloses Blankensee Airport in the north, east and south. To the east, beyond the old federal road 207 in Groß Grönau, which has been downgraded to state road 331, the nature reserve " Wakenitz " joins. The nature reserve encompasses the areas of the Grönau Heath, which is partially on inland dunes at the edge of the Wakenitz lowlands and the Lübeck Basin , which was formerly used as a training area by the Federal Police and the Armed Forces , the Grönau Moor with its border areas and the Blankensee with its muddy inflow channel and the Blankenseebach up to the state road 331. In addition, buffer zones are included in the nature reserve. The areas of the Grönau Heath were completely forested until the 14th century. In the late Middle Ages , the forests were cleared and some of the land was cultivated. The repeatedly unused areas were taken over by Heide .

Furthermore, there are grass lawns with occurrences of finial and heather . There are also areas free of vegetation. The moored areas are often occupied by pipe grasses and swinging lawns and bog forests. Along the Blank Seebach and forest line are Hochstaudenfluren to find. The areas included as buffer zones in the nature reserve are partly used for agriculture as arable land and grassland . Areas in the south of the nature reserve are grazed with sheep for care.
