geography

The lake is to the east of the Lübeck district of the same name, Blankensee, Lübeck-St. Jürgen , and south of the Lübeck-Blankensee airport at a height of 9.9 m above sea level and has a size of 22.5 hectares. The Flachsee has an average depth of only 1.63 m with a maximum depth of 2.7 meters. It is considered to be one of the few lime-poor lakes in Schleswig-Holstein. Located in the Natura 2000 area “Grönauer Heide, Grönauer Moor and Blankensee”, it is assigned to FFH - habitat type 3130 “Oligo- to mesotrophic stagnant water with vegetation of the Littorelletea uniflorae and / or the Isoeto-Nanojuncetea”. The inflow in the west and outflow in the east are via the Blankenseebach, which flows into the Wakenitz via the Grönau . In the bank areas there are mostly narrow reed belts , wet forests, alder quarries , an alder forest and grasslands. In the west there is a comparatively species-rich quarry forest .

history

Mills for using the water of the Blankensee 1590

In 1300 the Lübeck St. John's Monastery acquired half of the village of Blankensee from the Lübeck councilor Gottfried von Cremon and in 1360 also half of the lake. In comparison to the Möllner Pertinenzien , the city of Lübeck was confirmed territorial sovereignty over this property in 1749, which led to the demarcation between Lübeck and today's Duchy of Lauenburg in the middle of the lake. The southern half of the lake belonged sovereignly to the area of the noble estate Tüschenbek . On the east bank, in the Hornstorf area, there used to be the Seekrug inn , on the south bank the Tüschenbeker Mühle , a windmill, was located. Street names remember both today. In addition, there was a water mill as a paper mill at the outflow of the lake. Another watermill was located in Groß Grönau shortly before the confluence of the Grönau in the Wakenitz. The gradient from Blankensee to Wakenitz is about six meters.

In the 20th century, the area around the lake was marked by the development of the airport on the one hand and the first associated barracks with associated training area on the other. After 1945 the barracks were used to accommodate refugees. The military use resumed in 1960 as the Hanseatic barracks ended in 1993.

Since January 2010 the entrepreneur Winfried Stöcker ( Euroimmun ) has owned 90 percent of the lake that is adjacent to his company premises. The remaining 10 percent are owned by the Hanseatic City of Lübeck.

Condition and use

Originally the Blankensee was a nutrient-poor lake with a sandy bottom. When the nature reserve was designated in 2006, however, the lake was found to be in a hypertrophic state, to which, in addition to agriculture, the discharge of aircraft de-icing residues from the airport had contributed. The assessment of the FFH habitat type showed a poor conservation status (conservation status C). Already after the Second World War, the pollution of the lake was caused by the sewage of an emergency reception center for refugees .

2009 was a successful phosphate - precipitation carried out, the improved water quality. Nevertheless, in 2012 it was still classified as a more disturbed body of water .

Until the end of 2007 the Blankensee, whose abundance of fish was known, was leased to a sport fishing club . Highlighted is a 13- pound catfish that was fished in the lake in the early 20th century. Due to its location in the nature reserve, the use of the lake is subject to severe restrictions today. In the 1920s, the great pond clam , the painter clam and the great river clam appeared in the fauna of the Blankensee . With regard to the flora of the area around the lake and the adjacent moor, a considerable decline in rare species was noted in the same context.
