Werner Neugebauer (archaeologist)

Werner Neugebauer (born October 16, 1908 in Anklam ; † February 4, 2002 in Lübeck ) was a German archaeologist.

Life

Neugebauer grew up in Cottbus . After studying in Breslau, he worked at the Municipal Museum in Elbing in 1934 and, after completing his doctorate, became its director in 1938, succeeding Bruno Ehrlich . After the Second World War he came to Lübeck as a refugee. It was initially used in the salvage work of exhibits in the ruins of the cathedral museum, which was destroyed in the air raid on Lübeck , and of art objects in the also badly damaged Marienkirche in Lübeck . From 1948 on he led the emergency excavations that were necessary before the reconstruction of the destroyed houses in Lübeck's old town . Until his retirement he worked as the head of the Lübeck monument preservation department. During the time of his activity Lübeck became a German "metropolis of medieval archeology". Günter Fehring was his successor . Since 1982 he has been a member of the Historical Commission for East and West Prussian State Research .

During the erection of the Heinrich-der-Löwe ​​monument in Lübeck he worked as a scientific advisor.
