Ludwig Heinrich Ernst Deecke (born October 1, 1805 in Lübeck ; † April 24, 1862 there ) was a German teacher and polyhistor of the 19th century .

Life

Ernst Deecke grew up in modest but not poor circumstances. The father August Deecke had come to Lübeck from Celle in 1804 and had successfully run a café with a pastry shop. He attended the Katharineum until Easter 1824. After studying theology in Halle (Saale) and Göttingen and the graduation to the Dr. phil. Ernst Deecke became collaborator in Lübeck in 1829 at the Bürgererschule, the real branch of the Katharineum . After the death of Friedrich Tiburtius , he took over his position as class teacher of the Quarta and at the same time the management of the attached boys' boarding school. When he rose to the position of 3rd professor at the Katharineum in 1847 , he took over the management of the city ​​library , as has been customary since the 17th century .

In 1848 he became an envoy from the Free and Hanseatic City of Lübeck to the Frankfurt National Assembly in the Paulskirche. He was a member of the casino faction . In the time of his absence, the poet Emanuel Geibel taught at the Katharineum.

Deecke was a co-founder of the " Neue Lübeckische Blätter " and belonged to the " Jung-Lübeck " group. He was master of the chair of the Masonic Lodge “Zum Füllhorn” in Lübeck and a member of the Great State Lodge of the Freemasons of Germany .

Ernst Deecke was married to Wilhelmine, née Müller (1805–1838) from Braunschweig . They had four children, the eldest son was the linguist Wilhelm Deecke . The daughter Berta (1834–1902) married the businessman Heinrich Peter Wohlert (1824–1900) and became the mother of the librarian Heinrich Wohlert . Deecke's second wife was Johanna called Jenny, née Boldemann (1805-1848) from Grabow in Mecklenburg. Their child was Hermann Deecke , later Senator zu Lübeck.

Awards and honorary positions

On May 22nd, 1860, the Danish King Friedrich VII awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Dannebrog Order .

Ernst Deecke held numerous (honorary) offices: 1843–1862 in the board of directors of the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities , 1836–1844 board member of the Natural History Collection (today Museum for Nature and Environment ), since 1837 member of the "Association for Lübeck History" ( today "Society for Lübeck History and Archeology"), from 1838 member of the "Society for Lübeck Statistics", from 1848 member of the committee for the collection of Lübeck art treasures, honorary member of the "Royal Society for Archeology" in Copenhagen, honorary member of the historical associations of Hamburg , Mecklenburg, Braunschweig and Schleswig-Holstein.
