Rainer Koch (historian)

Rainer Koch (born December 8, 1944 in Leipzig ) is a German historian and former museum director.

Life

Koch graduated from high school in Frankfurt am Main in 1964 . Then he did military service and reached the rank of lieutenant in the reserve. From 1966 to 1971 he studied law , history , political science and philosophy at the University of Giessen . After passing the state examination , he became Lothar Gall's research assistant at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute at the Free University of Berlin . In 1974 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1975 he was awarded the Wolf-Erich-Kellner Prize for his dissertation on Julius Froebel . His doctorate was followed by his assistant at the history seminar at the University of Frankfurt . He was also the editorial assistant for the historical magazine . In 1982 he qualified as a professor in Middle and Modern History.

In 1983 Koch became director of the Historisches Museum Frankfurt and remained so until 2005. In 1989 he was appointed chief museum director. In 1994 he became an adjunct professor of history in the history department of the University of Frankfurt. His research focus is German constitutional and social history.

Koch is a member of the Frankfurt Historical Commission , the Historical Commission for Nassau , the Historical-Archaeological Society Frankfurt am Main (board) and the Korn-Gerstemann-Stiftung (board). He was a member of the board of trustees of the Wolf-Erich-Kellner Memorial Foundation .

Koch is married and has two children.
