The Dummersdorfer Ufer is located in Lübeck on the western bank of the lower course of the Trave between the neighboring Travemünde ferry port Skandinavienkai and the districts of Herrenwyk and Kücknitz . Together with the ground monument Stülper Huk , the nature reserves on the Priwall and around the Dassower See on the eastern bank, it forms an important bird sanctuary in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, comparable to the Schellbruch . As early as 1925, the area was declared a "comprehensive natural monument" on the initiative of Wilhelm Ohnesorge . But since it was the area intended for the expansion of industry in 1929, the preservation struggle had to be abandoned as hopeless. On May 11, 1929, Ohnesorge led what was likely to be the last tour on the bank. However, force majeure prevented the expansion and it has been designated as a nature reserve since 1958 . The originally 48 hectare area of the nature reserve was expanded to 340 hectares in 1991.

“The nature reserve serves to protect an almost closed side bay of the Ice Age valley system of the Trave, including two islands with dry grass, field trees and reeds as a habitat for species-rich flora and fauna typical of the landscape, etc. a. as a summer resting and wintering area for Nordic water birds at the intersection of two major bird migration routes. "

- from § 3 of the Nature Conservation Ordinance

The nature reserve Dummersdorfer Ufer is looked after by a landscape conservation association. In the course of the expansion of the neighboring Skandinavienkai, the nature reserve will also suffer. The wave impact is increased by increased shipping traffic and causes more demolition.

A geological peculiarity are the osteocollas occurring in some areas of the steep bank , which are known from only a few places in Central Europe.
