The Wakenitz is a nature reserve in the city of Lübeck and in the communities of Groß Grönau and Groß Sarau in the Duchy of Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein .

The approximately 607  hectare area is registered under number 177 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment, Nature and Digitization . It was designated in 1999 (date of regulation: April 20, 1999). The nature reserve borders southeast of Lübeck on the nature reserve " Wakenitzniederung " in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , near Groß Grönau on the nature reserve " Grönauer Heide, Grönauer Moor und Blankensee " and southeast of Groß Grönau on the nature reserve " Kammerbruch " in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . Luebeck and southeast of Lübeck it borders in places to the conservation area "Wakenitz and Falk Husen," have been merged from the parts in the nature reserve, in Luebeck addition to the lying in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern natural preserve "Palingener Heath Peninsula Teschow". The FFH area "Herrnburger Dünen" in the north as well as parts of the FFH area "Forests and lakeside east of the Ratzeburg lake" and the bird sanctuary "Schaalsee area" lie within the nature reserve. The area between Groß Grönau and the Ratzeburg Lake is on the edge of the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park .

The nature reserve extends along the Wakenitz between Lake Ratzeburg and the Lübeck district of Eichholz . It places the Wakenitz with its lowland and partially adjacent areas under protection. Large parts of the nature reserve are located in the Green Belt along the former inner-German border .

The Wakenitz with open water areas, floating leaves and reed beds - silting zones , side bays and side arms is accompanied over long stretches by alder forest with black alder as the dominant tree species and ash and especially in the south of the protected area also by wet meadows . Forests are partly characterized by deciduous forest communities. Swamp sword lily , swamp calla , bittersweet nightshade and water primrose , for example , settle in the herbaceous layer of the swamp forests . Settle on the wet meadows and a. Marsh marigold , cuckoo flower and meadowfoam , but also broad-leaved orchid and meadowsweet .

In the north of the nature reserve, the “Krögerland”, a moist side valley of the Wakenitz, is included in the nature reserve. It is predominantly characterized by wet grassland with sour grasses , rushes , marsh marigolds and orchids such as the broad-leaved orchid. The wet grassland borders on the quarry forest that accompanies the Wakenitz and is otherwise completely surrounded by the settlement area of ​​Lübeck and an allotment garden area.

The Wakenitz is dammed in Lübeck. As a result, it forms the “Little Lake” in the south of the city, which is almost completely surrounded by alder forest. A reed belt of reeds and bulrushes as well as fields of sea and pond rose adjoin the quarry forest .

In Lübeck there are inland dunes north of the Wakenitz , which were blown up after the end of the Vistula glacial period . Here is dry grasslands developed, as well as around the north subsequent Teufelsmoor. Since the areas are no longer grazed, they are in danger of being overgrown and have to be de-pussed and mowed for maintenance . The dry grasslands are the habitat of species-rich flora and fauna that are adapted to the local conditions. So settle here z. B. silver grass , carnation, sand bells and sand straw flower . The sandy soil enables sand bees to create a nest. The dry grass communities are also the habitat of various butterflies and grasshoppers . For example, fire butterflies and chessboards are native here. The Teufelsmoor has formed in a damp hollow . It is characterized by broken forest with peat moss . Here u. a. the swamp calla. The bog is the habitat of grass snakes .

In addition to other Wakenitz come catfish , pike , perch , eel , perch , carp , tench , roach , bream and silver bream before.

In the north the Lübeck – Bad Kleinen railway line crosses the nature reserve, in the south the A 20 .

There is a natural swimming pool on the east bank of the Kleiner See.
