The nature reserve is characterized by the Kittlitzer Hofsee and the stream system with pronounced depressions and slopes. It stands next to the lake through puddles and ponds with silting areas , large sedge Riedern , reed beds , wet woodlands and succession sflächen out. In the peripheral areas, forest areas as well as arable and grassland areas are included in the nature reserve.

The nature reserve is largely surrounded by agricultural land . In the west, the Eichhorst is a forest area characterized by beeches . The nature reserve offers a habitat for numerous animals and plants, including amphibians such as crested newt and red-bellied toad , birds such as cranes , medium-sized woodpeckers , black woodpeckers , red- backed shrimp , marsh harriers , wasp buzzards , goosander , lapwing and quail as well as pygmy saws , tufted ducks and shovelers , which use the area as a resting area. The white stork visits the area as a food visitor.
