The Kittlitzer Hofsee and the surrounding area is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Kittlitz and Salem in the Duchy of Lauenburg .
The 178 hectare nature reserve is registered under number 195 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was designated in 2008 (date of regulation: October 27, 2008). It is largely part of the FFH area “Amphibian areas west of Kittlitz” and completely part of the EU bird sanctuary “Schaalsee area”. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Duchy of Lauenburg district.
The nature reserve is located southeast of Ratzeburg in the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park between Mustin , Kittlitz and the Salem district of Dargow. It consists of an Ice Age valley system and places the Kittlitzer Hofsee with the Kittlitzer Bach and the Dargower Graben with its surroundings as well as the small water area between Mustin and Kittlitz under protection. The nature reserve is characterized by the Kittlitzer Hofsee and the stream system with pronounced depressions and slopes. It stands next to the lake through puddles and ponds with silting areas , large sedge Riedern , reed beds , wet woodlands and succession sflächen out. In the peripheral areas, forest areas as well as arable and grassland areas are included in the nature reserve.
The nature reserve is largely surrounded by agricultural land . In the west, the Eichhorst is a forest area characterized by beeches . The nature reserve offers a habitat for numerous animals and plants, including amphibians such as crested newt and red-bellied toad , birds such as cranes , medium-sized woodpeckers , black woodpeckers , red- backed shrimp , marsh harriers , wasp buzzards , goosander , lapwing and quail as well as pygmy saws , tufted ducks and shovelers , which use the area as a resting area. The white stork visits the area as a food visitor.
The waters in the nature reserve are characterized by mostly species- and structure- richly developed pondweed and floating leaf vegetation .
