The east bank of the Great Ratzeburg Lake is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein city of Ratzeburg and the municipality of Römnitz in the Duchy of Lauenburg .

The approximately 231  hectare nature reserve is registered under number 169 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was designated in 1995 (date of regulation: August 12, 1995) and expanded to its present size in 2000. The nature reserve is almost completely part of the EU bird sanctuary "Schaalsee area" and the FFH area "Forests and lakeside east of the Ratzeburg lake". In the north it borders on the nature reserve " Chamber break " and on the east by the nature reserves " Campower bluff " and " Stone trough and Mechower wood " and the protected landscape "Schaalsee". The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Duchy of Lauenburg district.

The nature reserve, which consists of five sub-areas, is located north of Ratzeburg in the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park . It is part of the Green Belt along the former inner-German border . The nature reserve stretches on the east bank of the Ratzeburg lake between Rothenhusen and Römnitz and represents the eastern shore area of the lake up to the state border with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , water areas and siltation zones in front of the shore area and, south of the Mechower border trench, the forest areas Seebruch and Steinort to the east of the lake and a swampy area on the Schwalkenberg in Römnitz under protection.

The east bank of the Ratzeburger See is occupied by extensive reed beds and silting areas, which are adjoined by narrow quarry forest areas inland as well as the aforementioned riparian forests Seebruch and Steinort with near-natural forest communities, numerous springs , ponds , ravines and steep slopes. The sanctuary is an important habitat for numerous water birds and is also of great importance as a resting and wintering area for birds. It also serves to network the protected areas between Wakenitz and Schaalsee .

The zones at Utecht , Campow, Kalkhütte and Römnitz excluded from the scope of the nature conservation ordinance are subject to recreational use. Here there are primarily bathing areas, boat berths with jetties and camping sites .
