Rothenhusen

Rothenhusen is a medieval customs station and ferry of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, which was fortified by Lübeck in 1595, on a small island at the northern end of the Ratzeburg Lake in the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park , directly at the outflow of the Wakenitz from the lake.

The fortification at this point served to ward off attacks by the dukes of Saxony-Lauenburg . Rothenhusen belongs to the municipality of Groß Sarau on the Alte Salzstrasse , but like Wakenitz itself has been owned by the Hanseatic City of Lübeck since the Middle Ages. A wooden road bridge from 1927, which was repaired after the fall of the Wall, led at this point over the Wakenitz and thus connected Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg . On the Mecklenburg side in Utecht , the Schaalsee biosphere reserve connects to the nature park of the Lauenburg shore. The old bridge was demolished in 2008 and replaced by a new bridge in 2009. The construction of the bridge was initially stopped on March 13, 2009 by a decision of the Schleswig Administrative Court at the request of the BUND . The bridge was two weeks from completion. A settlement failed because the public sector was not prepared to pay a compensation amount to the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve Foundation as required by the environmental associations . The district administrator of the Duchy of Lauenburg district, Gerd Krämer, assessed the BUND's demand as an “attempt at blackmail.” Nevertheless, the opening took place in early April 2009. The passenger ship lines coming from Ratzeburg and Lübeck meet in Rothenhusen . On the western side of the Wakenitz, the Drägerweg continues as a hiking trail to Lübeck.
