Steinerne Rinne and Mechower Holz is a nature reserve in the Schleswig-Holstein communities of Römnitz , Bäk and Mechow in the Duchy of Lauenburg .

The approximately 207  hectare nature reserve is registered under number 176 in the directory of nature reserves of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas. It was declared as of September 10, 2004 (date of regulation: August 2, 2004). The nature reserve is partly part of the FFH area “Forests and lakeside east of the Ratzeburg lake” and the EU bird protection area “Schaalsee area”. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the Duchy of Lauenburg district.

The nature reserve is located east of the Great Ratzeburg Lake on the edge of the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park and is part of the Green Belt . In the west it borders on the nature reserve "East Shore of the Great Ratzeburg Lake" in Schleswig-Holstein and the nature reserve " Campower Steilufer " in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . In the north and east it borders on the nature reserves " Kiekbuschwiesen bei Neuhof " and " Mechower See " in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and in the south on the nature reserve "Mechower Seeufer" in Schleswig-Holstein. By placing it under protection, the gap between the nature reserves “Eastern Shore of the Great Ratzeburg Lake” and “Mechower Seeufer” or the nature reserves already existing in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was closed.

The nature reserve is located in the middle of an agriculturally used, Ice Age shaped moraine landscape . It represents the part of a Rinnental, which is located in the Schleswig-Holstein area , and which is deeply cut to the Mechower See , which arose during the Glacial Vistula , as well as the Steinerne Rinne, which drained to the Großer Ratzeburger See, and the Mechower, which is south of the Rinnen landscape Wood under protection. The channel system is formed by a well-defined brook gorge with a natural brook course . The creek basin in the valley is occupied by various types of biotope, including wet grassland , succession areas and forest areas . The lowlands are bordered by inclined surfaces and steep slopes, some of which are covered with deciduous forest communities .

The Mechower wood was previously used intensively for forestry. It has now been taken out of use and can develop permanently without human intervention. The forest is predominantly characterized by deciduous trees. Some areas, on which remote conifers used to grow, are being taken up by pioneer forest . Moist forests grow in damp depressions and towards the brook valley.

The various habitats in the nature reserve are home to numerous animal and plant species. Mechower wood is the habitat of the middle woodpecker , crane and white-tailed eagle , all of which breed here. The bushy edges of the forest offer u. a. Sparrowhawk Warbler and Common Owl habitat. The red-bellied toad and otters can also be found in the nature reserve, as well as red-backed shrimp , whinchat , common raven , tree falcon , red kite , white stork and the like. a. The area is managed by the Schaalsee Landscape Association.
