About this picture

Mechow is a municipality east of Lake Ratzeburg in the Duchy of Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein .

history

Mechow was first mentioned in a document in 1194 in Isfried's partition contract and is also listed in the Ratzeburg tithe register . The Mecklenburg Mechow came as part of an exchange of territory ( Barber-Lyashchenko Agreement ) in 1945 from the Soviet occupation zone to the British and thus to Schleswig-Holstein. The largest landowner in Mechow was a Mecklenburg state domain of 254 hectares , which was administered by the Federal Republic of Germany until 1990. The domain was originally the property of the respective cathedral provost at Ratzeburg Cathedral and became state property after the secularization in 1648, initially to the Principality of Ratzeburg .
