About this picture

Hornbek is a municipality in the Duchy of Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein . She belongs to the Breitenfelde office .

history

The village was mentioned in a document in the Ratzeburg tithe register from 1230 as "Horgenbece". In 1391 the Hanseatic City of Lübeck bought Hornbek to ensure the safety of the Old Salt Road . With the construction of the Stecknitz Canal, the Via Regia lost its importance, so that Hornbek was ceded to the Duchy of Lauenburg in 1747 . Hornbek has been part of the newly established Breitenfelde Office since 1889 .

During the construction of the Reichsautobahn Hamburg-Berlin, a large urn grave field from the pre-Roman Iron Age and Roman Empire was excavated west of the village from 1938 to 1941. It contained around 900 urn graves, some of which were covered with stone paving of different sizes. The grave field belongs to the group of large flat grave fields in southeast Holstein, which were created towards the end of the Hallstatt period and remained in use until the Roman Empire . In its older phase , the burial ground belongs to the Jastorf culture , which is generally regarded as the archaeological "culture" from which the Germanic tribes mentioned in the written sources are said to have emerged later.
