history
The village was first mentioned in the Ratzeburg tithe register as Coledowe in 1230 . It belongs to a group of Slavic named places Gülzow , Börse, Krukow , Thömen and Krüzen , which lie outside the old settlement area of the Abodrites and whose boundaries belong to the areas opened up by the Saxon development at the latest in the 10th century. In the 11th century this area was occupied by the Polabians, who successfully maintained their settlements until the beginning of the colonization period.
The place name goes back to Old Polish * Kolov and is a formation of Old Polish * kolo "wheel" and the possessive suffix -ov and means "settlement of the wheel" or "settlement of the wheel makers" (see coat of arms of the place).
Since 1948 the community has belonged to the Schwarzenbek-Land office .
