About this picture

Labenz is a municipality in the Duchy of Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein .

history

The Slavic foundation Labenz (from the Slavic family of languages with the addition of German for “swan”, “river rich in fish” or “close to the water”) is located on the old trade route Lübeck - Hamburg and was first mentioned in 1390. The center of the village is the Mühlenteich, a water link between Wehrensteich and the former Duvenseer See. The old watermill, which was in operation until the 20th century, is located by the mill pond.

Several windmills were built, benefiting from the hilly location. The largest, a five-winged one, stood on the windmill paddock on the road to Lüchow. These elements windmill, water and swan, which have shaped the townscape and the place name for centuries, are reflected in the town's coat of arms, which was officially introduced by the municipality in 1996.

Like most villages, Labenz has undergone fundamental changes over the past hundred years. Initially clearly characterized by agriculture, in 1908 41 farms, 13 handicraft businesses and five inns with a total of 76 apartments with 416 inhabitants dominated the townscape. After the Second World War, settlement development began, which peaked after the wave of refugees in 1945–1950, after 1975 and after the fall of the Iron Curtain. It made Labenz a residential village. The dairy in Labenz closed its doors in 1972 and was converted into a residential building. The settlement activities will initially be completed around 2004 for reasons of the overarching state planning. Labenz will then have 300 apartments. There are currently 8 farms, 28 commercial enterprises and an inn with a boarding house in Labenz. Since 1994 Labenz has had a central local drainage system and a supply of natural gas.

Despite all the structural development, historically significant buildings, evidence of the former farming village, could be preserved or restored. After the school was closed in the 1970s, the old school became the home for the children's play area, which opened up in 1997 in the newly built integrative kindergarten. The kindergarten is located in the Labenz community center, which arose from the renovation and expansion of the old school.

In the community center numerous events of the cultural committee, the volunteer fire brigade , the welfare associations as well as the local parties and electoral communities take place. Until recently, the old syringe house was used as a meeting place by the young people of the village.

coat of arms

Blazon : “Split by silver and blue. In front a red windmill with a pointed dome and five blue wings, behind a gold-armed, battle-ready silver swan. "

The coat of arms approved in 1995 was designed by Siegbert Herbst from Bäk .

particularities

Douglas Adams ' translator Sven Böttcher used the place name Labenz as a nonsense word in " The deeper meaning of Labenz ".

Since 2002 Labenz has also been the headquarters of "Lost Beauties". This organization is committed to the preservation of old rose varieties. In April 2007, the first roses were planted in the L'âge bleu rose park in front of the town entrance, which is to become the largest rose collection in northern Germany.
