history

The village was first mentioned as a parish in the Ratzeburg cathedral chapter directory in 1194 . Breitenfelde was on the historic Old Salt Road from Lüneburg to Lübeck . In the 15th century it belonged to the city of Lübeck and half to the Marienwohlde monastery . The Breitenfelde office was created in 1889 by order of the Prussian Minister of the Interior after Prussia took possession of the Duchy of Lauenburg.

From November 1944 to April 1945, an external command of the Neuengamme concentration camp was housed in Breitenfelde . It comprised 20 prisoners who had to do forced labor for the SS construction management in Mölln in the sawmill of the Karl Gülzow company.

coat of arms

Blazon : “Divided by black and silver. Above a silver horse's head, below six closely spaced, narrowing towards the top, growing alternating blue and red posts. "

The division of the coat of arms symbolizes the centuries-long division of the community into a part of Lübeck's lien and a part belonging to the Marienwohlde monastery . The Prussian variant of the coat of arms of the Duchy of Lauenburg is shown in the upper part. The tinging of the lower part symbolizes the affiliation to Schleswig-Holstein. Furthermore, it represents the place name in the literal sense through the equally wide fields.

Municipality flag

flag

Blazon : "On a white flag, bordered by a wide red stripe at the top and bottom, the municipal coat of arms, slightly shifted from the center towards the pole."

The paintings in the vaults are early Gothic. The middle of the three stained glass windows in the east wall of the choir dates from the same time. The glazing of the two other windows was carried out in the course of the renovation work in 1867 by Carl Julius Milde .
