About this picture

Juliusburg is a municipality in the Duchy of Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein .

history

The village was first mentioned in a document as Abenthorp in the Ratzeburg tithe register in 1230 and was called Abbendorf until 1678 before it was renamed Juliusburg. The village belonged to the knights Wulf from Schwarzenbek. In 1416 Klaus Wulf pledged his rights to Abbendorf to Otto Schack . His son Hartig Schack pledged Abbendorf in 1423 with the approval of Duke Erich V, together with the villages of Thömen and Krukow, to the Marienkirche in Lübeck. Richardis, Hartig's widow, elected Duke Bernhard as guardian, and in 1441 he brought the three villages into his possession after he had ransomed them. Jürgen von der Kettenburg married the daughter Joachim Schacks and in 1570 was enfeoffed with the Abbendorf estate. Franz Heinrich von der Kettenburg sold the estate to Duke August in 1620. From 1633 to 1636 the master hunter Ernst von Berge leased Abbendorf. The village suffered badly in the Thirty Years' War, when the Swedes crossed the Elbe near Artlenburg in 1637 under General Banner.

The dukes of Lauenburg had a summer residence in Abbendorf and had a dam built over the moor to Lauenburg, which is still there today. Julius Heinrich gave Abbendorf the name Juliusburg and laid out a zoo here in 1660. The retirees from all offices each had to deliver a load of bushes. During the Hanoverian period, they wanted to restore the very dilapidated zoo, but abandoned this plan. The park was leveled in 1704.

politics
