About this picture

Siebeneichen is a municipality in the Duchy of Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein .

history

An Eberhardt von Seueneken is mentioned as early as 1211 . The village itself was mentioned for the first time in the Ratzeburg tithe register from 1230. At the same time the first church was built, which was demolished as dilapidated in 1749. The patron Johann Hartwig Ernst von Bernstorff , owner of Gut Wotersen , had a new church built in 1753, in which he was buried in 1772.

With the construction of the Stecknitz-Delvenau Canal , the "wet salt road" between Lüneburg and Lübeck, which was completed in 1398, Siebeneichen became the contact point for the Stecknitz drivers. Even today there are stalls reserved for this boatmen's guild in the Siebeneichen church.

Place name

The origin of the place name is not clearly documented, it could have its origin from the oaks in the old village square in front of the church, because there used to be exactly seven oaks there, but it is also possible that the name comes from seven farms.

One of the sights is the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Siebeneichen. Built in 1753, the tower was destroyed in a major fire in 1909. The foundation walls were raised by around one meter during the reconstruction. The 33 meter high tower towers over the village and is clearly visible from afar.
