history

Siebeneichen ferry at berth

The ferry connection over the Elbe-Trave Canal has existed since it began to be used in 1900. The Waterways and Shipping Office had to provide “replacement routes”, as there was a road to the east here. The ferry was originally a hand-operated cable-operated ferry until 1960, one of which held the direction of the rope while the other was responsible for the forward movement. It was only after 1960 that the ferry built in Rendsburg-Saatsee at the state shipyard received a diesel drive.

The crossing was free until 1986, but then the operator (district of the Duchy of Lauenburg / Büchen) demanded ferry fees because he had taken over the ferry for DM 1.1 million . Two ferrymen shared the work. The ferryman's original house has since been sold to private customers.

As of 2016, the financing of the Siebeneichen ferry was no longer secured and operations were due to cease on July 2, 2016. There are many local activities to keep the ferry going. A daily record of 1152 passengers was achieved at one of the events. A support association was founded in 2014 to support the ferry .

The ferry has been a listed building since 2015. The ferry operation has been secured again since 2017 and is supported by the Herzogtum Lauenburg district, the Siebeneichen community and Förderverein Fähre Siebeneichen eV.

  • The ferry service runs in the season from April 1st to October 3rd.
  • The ferry times are on Friday, weekends and public holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • It is free to use.

technical description

Ferry route and lead rope

The ferry in Siebeneichen is a cable ferry, ie it drives on a guide rope and also has a pull rope on which it is pulled forward by means of a motor . The ferry is therefore a so-called "non-free-moving ferry" in shipping:

  • The support or guide rope leads from one bank to the other and is at rest at the bottom of the canal so that ships can pass through the canal unhindered.
  • For the ferry, the guide rope is tensioned so that it hovers just above the water surface.
  • The driving or pulling rope also lies at rest on the bottom of the canal and is only lifted by the pull of the motor during the ferry.
  • During the ferry process - and this begins with the tensioning of the guide rope - the ferry has priority over all other watercraft, whether inland waterways, paddle boats, passenger ships or sports boats. Large ships emit sound signals to draw the ferryman's attention to themselves.
