history

The history of the place goes back to the Knights of Salem, who were among the most outstanding vassals of the County of Ratzeburg, established in 1154 . On behalf of their liege lords they founded several villages, but moved to Mecklenburg in the 14th century . In the Middle Ages, the Müggenburg with the village of Klein-Salem , which was already mentioned in the Ratzeburg tithe register of 1230, was located here on the western edge of today's Salem Moor nature reserve . Only the village of Salem, located at the northern tip of Lake Salem, has survived to this day . The Schaalsee drained since 1923 by the Phulsee , Pipersee and Salem Lake on the Schaalsee channel in the Ratzeburg Lake belonging Küchensee . One of the few hydroelectric power plants in Schleswig-Holstein has been operated there near Farchau since 1925 . In 1928 the forest estate districts Forstort, Eichhorst and Hundebusch were merged with the rural community of Salem. In 1938 the Dargow community was incorporated into the Salem community. From 1948 to 2006 the municipality of Salem belonged again (like 1888/89 to 1938) to the Gudow office, which in 1971 was combined with the Sterley office to the Gudow-Sterley office.
