About this picture

Sterley is a municipality in the Duchy of Lauenburg in Schleswig-Holstein . Gut Kogel, Kogeler Mühle, Kogel Siedlung, Neue Welt, Neu-Sterley, Söhren and Sterley-Heide are located in the municipality.

history

Originally the village was called "Stralige", derived from the Slavic word "streliga", which means "shooting site" and refers to an arrow smith. The parish of Sterley was first mentioned in 1194. It consisted of 40 hooves and probably an independent estate belonging to the knightly locator family von Sterlei, which is first mentioned in a document around 1230, but migrated to Kiel in the 13th century (the knight Johann von Sterlei is mentioned there in 1263 and 1290). Their property fell to the Wackerbarth in Kogel. Three medieval hilltop castles can be localized archaeologically: The keep of David Wackerbarth (under the sports field by the school), which the mayor of Lübeck had burned down as early as 1343 - shortly after it was built. (In the subsequent process, the builder was acquitted of the accusation of robber baronism and received compensation, but he did not rebuild the destroyed keep.) Then there was a rectangular castle with a moat on the street “Am Burggraben” on the “Alte Koppel” not until the 16th century. Furthermore, the remains of a wall in the former Winkelmoor at the Seedorf-Sterleyer Scheide can be seen.

For a long time Sterley was a purely farming village, but with the industrial development, more and more commercial businesses settled there. The number of farms decreased.

Since 1889 and 1948, the municipality was the seat of the Office Sterley, which in 1971 was combined with the Office Gudow to the Office Gudow-Sterley. On January 1, 2007, the Gudow-Sterley office was dissolved. Since then, Sterley has been co-administered by the Lauenburg Lakes Administration.

  • The St. John's church is a stone church from the 13th century with a wooden tower and old paintings inside. It was once under alternating patronage from manorial and ducal patrons and was the hereditary burial of the Wackerbarth on Kogel. In it is a tombstone adorned with coat of arms of Hartwich Wackerbard (1542–1602) and his wife Margarethe Daldorff (1540–1616). There is an oak tree that is hundreds of years old in the churchyard. A triptych painted by Mathilde Block in 1894 is part of the furnishings of the church .
  • The Kogel manor , first mentioned in 1194, remained in the possession of the von Wackerbarth family from the time of colonization until 1850 , after the death of Raugrafen August it was confiscated by the Danish crown as a "settled fief" and sold to the von Bülow family . It has belonged to the Loos and Meyer-Loos families since 1918.
