history
Köthel was first mentioned in a document as "Cotle" in 1230 in the Ratzeburg tithe register .
Around 1238 a Cistercian nunnery was settled in Köthel, which was relocated to today's town of Reinbek in 1240 as Reinbek Monastery . However, Köthel remained in possession of the monastery until the monastery was dissolved in the course of the Reformation in 1529. The part of the village north of the Bille came to the Reinbek office , the southern part to the Duke of Lauenburg . The two later became independent communities.
