Köthel ( Low German Keuthel ) is a municipality in the east of the Stormarn an der Bille district .

geography

Köthel is about ten kilometers east of Trittau .

The place is divided by the river Bille into a Stormarn and a Lauenburg part , which each form independent communities.

history

Köthel was first mentioned in a document as "Cotle" in 1230 in the Ratzeburg tithe register .

Around 1238 a Cistercian nunnery was settled in Köthel, which was relocated to today's town of Reinbek in 1240 as Reinbek Monastery . However, Köthel remained in possession of the monastery until the monastery was dissolved in the course of the Reformation in 1529. In the subsequent division of the monastery property, Köthel was divided. The part of the village south of the Bille went to the Duke of Lauenburg , the northern part to the Reinbek office .

In 1609 the Stormarnisch Köthel changed to the Trittau office . During the Thirty Years' War the place was quarters for Friedrich V.

After the annexation of Schleswig-Holstein by Prussia , Köthel was incorporated into the newly formed Stormarn district.

After the project to set up a pig fattening operation on the outskirts of Köthel became known in the summer of 2010 , massive protests formed and the citizens' initiative “No pig fattening in Köthel” was founded. On August 31, 2010, the community council of Köthel refused for the second time their community agreement for the controversial pig fattening project, against which 70% of the households of Köthel have spoken out in a signature campaign by the citizens' initiative. But the building supervision of the Stormarn district approved the preliminary construction request of the pig fattening applicant by replacing the communal agreement. The community representatives waived a lawsuit against this decision, which caused a great lack of understanding in the population. The citizens' initiative “No pig fattening in Köthel” and the lawyers it hired continued to try to stop the controversial project and to uncover formal and material deficits in the current building permit phase. At the beginning of February 2012 the building application for the pig fattening project was withdrawn by the applicant.
