Beginnings

Basedow is of Slavic origin and was first mentioned in a document in the Ratzeburg tithe register of 1230. Archaeological finds indicate settlement in the younger Stone and Bronze Ages .

Basedow belongs to the circle of old settlement areas in the southern Sadelbande , whose German settlement can be assumed around 1150. The name indicates an originally Wendish settlement, which was called Basedowe, which means "under the elder".

Since the 14th century

Due to its location on the Stecknitz Canal , which was put into operation in 1398 , which is known in today's parlance as the wet salt road and on which countless salt loads were transported from Lüneburg to Lübeck over the centuries , Basedow always had a connection to the trade of the Hanseatic League .

Basedow suffered badly from the armies of the Thirty Years' War . Only three of the originally twelve farms survived this time.

At the end of the Second World War

Germany lost World War II in 1945 and it was gradually occupied. In the last days of the war, the Allied troops moved further and further north. Preparations for the expected fighting began in April in the Duchy of Lauenburg. Positions, foxholes, trenches and anti-tank traps equipped with mines were established. In addition, various bridges were prepared for blasting.

After the British troops crossed the Elbe near Lauenburg , near Artlenburg and Schnakenbek , on April 29, the city of Lauenburg was captured. The same day the British troops advanced to Krüzen , Lütau and Basedow, where an SS - Panzergrenadier training and replacement battalion was in position for defense. In the late afternoon, a Scottish unit took the Stötebrück wooded area just before the village of Basedow and the village of Basedow itself. Apparently the village also suffered. In the early morning of April 30th, the Glasgow Highlanders attacked Lütau. Five British soldiers and 21 soldiers from the SS battalion died. With a final concentrated counterattack, the German 245th Infantry Division tried again at Basedow to push back the British. But the loss-making German attack failed. The British counterattacked that evening.

The remaining German units then moved into positions between the Elbe-Lübeck Canal near Büchen via Nüssau until shortly before Müssen . The following day there was also violent fighting at Büchen, which was ultimately also taken. Lübeck could already be occupied on May 2nd . On the same day, the executive government of the Reich fled from the Eutin - Plön area, 70 kilometers further north, from the approaching British troops to Flensburg - Mürwik . The following day, the British soldiers marched into Hamburg, not far to the west. The day after, all German troops in northwest Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark were finally capitulated .

politics

Community representation

Since the local elections in 2008, the WVB community of voters has all nine seats in the local council.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In green with a golden border over a chiseled, Bronze Age golden arm ring, four silver beech leaves closely spaced with black stems like a St. Andrew's cross."

The four leaves in the coat of arms are beech leaves, which indicate the name of the place, which was interpreted as the Wendish name for a beech nest. Today, however, it is assumed that this interpretation is incorrect. A Bronze Age arm ring, which was found in the municipality, is depicted under the beech leaves.

Economy and Infrastructure

Basedow is known for its asparagus.

The nearest train stations with passenger traffic are Lauenburg (Elbe) on the Lübeck – Lüneburg railway line and Büchen at the intersection of this line with the Hamburg – Berlin railway line . Both are about eight kilometers from Basedow.
